My first DPP (dark patched pied) gerbil, named Oliver, was a lilac from a friend in New York who was also breeding gerbils at the time. He had a big white collar, and a huge dark patch of gray on his side. (much darker then any of the other gray on his body) He was very pretty, interesting, and friendly, and the only one in his litter, or other litters from his parents, who had this type of spot. Neither of his parents had it. I kept Oliver for about a year, and during that period bred him to several different females, none of which produced another DPP gerbil. Some of the females had DPP in their lines, but no more were ever produced with Oliver. After a year I gave him to a friend who was working with DPP's at the time, in hopes that she would be able to produce more, but he never ended up producing any DPP offspring. He did however have a great personality, and he passed this on to many of his pups.

I continued breeding and raising gerbils, mainly working with mottles, as I love how each patterned gerbil is unique in his or her own way. No two look exactly alike. Most mottles I've worked with have also have very gentle temperaments, and that was something I was looking for in my lines.

I eventually ended up with a very nice mottled pair, an EM argente who I named "Bailey's Irish Cream", and a medium mottled black who I named "Chloe". These two had a few instances of DPP and DP (dark patched) back in their lines, but after working with mottles for a few years, I knew that this didn't neccessarily mean they were going to produce any, and I really wasn't expecting them to. However, they did. :)

This pair produced "Flora" (pictured below) an EM DP argente, with a huge spot of dark orange that covers part of her side and back.

The picture in the bottom right hand corner also shows another DPP produced by Bailey and Chloe. He is a DPP mottled black named Thompkin, and was in the same litter as Flora. He has kept the small dark patch on the top of his back, and the larger one on his rump through out adulthood, and has so far never been bred.

Flora is currently paired with a mottled agouti, "Mr.Merlot", but has not yet produced any DPP offspring.

"Oberon", an EM black, who went on to produce several DP pups of his own, with a pied yellow fox female named "Avalon" as his mate. Oberon is pictured below.

Oberon and Avalon produced "Ash", an EM DP lilac male with a tiny, but very pronounced spot of darker gray on side.

They also produced "Harlequin", a mottled DPP black female.
